TUAW TV Live: Taxes, Texas and Tim

Today on TUAW TV Live, cohost Shawn “Doc Rock” Boyd and I will be conversing about a number of topics. Yesterday saw Apple CEO Tim Cook being grilled by a Senate committee about corporate taxes and at the same time passing along a hint that a “refreshed Mac line” will be manufactured in the Great State of Texas, so both of those are worthy of banter. There are also some new products that have made it to the TUAW Labs in recent days, so we’ll have some quick unboxings for your viewing pleasure.
To view the livestream and join the chat, visit the TUAW TV Live page here. Be sure to bookmark that page on your browser for future TUAW TV events. Past episodes can be found on our YouTube channel, and today’s show will also appear on this page within 24 hours.

TUAW TV Live: Google’s announcements about iOS

Today at the Google I/O 2013 keynote, developers were treated to a long (three-hour) keynote that covered the gamut from Android developer tools to Google+. The most fascinating parts of the talk for those of us in the Apple world were the variety of features that will be available to iOS users (and those using Google products on the web) almost immediately.
My usual partner in crime, Shawn “Doc Rock” Boyd, and I will be getting together this afternoon for an hour of chat about these announcements and more. This week we’re starting something a little different: you’ll be able to watch today’s show on the TUAW TV Live page. You wanted a wider video, you’ve got it.
Be sure to bookmark the page after you click the link below, because that’s where we’ll be every week from now on. Remember that you can watch previous episodes on our YouTube channel any time.

TUAW TV Live: The shiny new live stream edition

Welcome back to another hour of fun, excitement, and chat on this week’s TUAW TV Live. The show is now part of the AOL On Network, so we’re using a different livestream tool and chat room. No more Ustream, no more IRC chatroom. It’s all right here on this page, where you’ll watch the show and also be able to join us in Chatroll. Just click the play button on the player around 5 PM ET, sign into Chatroll with your Twitter or Facebook account, and you’re ready to roll.
Today Doc and I will be talking about the latest news in the Apple world, showing off some new apps and sifting through the latest pile of accessories. Note that at the present time, you can participate on iPad but that the video stream may show pixelation from time to time — we’re working on that. The iPad viewer will let you blast TUAW TV Live to your HDTV via the magic of AirPlay. If you’re watching on your Mac, full-screen mode is just a click away.
Can’t join us today? A playlist of recent shows is available on YouTube 24/7. The hosts can be contacted on Twitter as @stevensande and @docrock, and we’ll always notify you when the next show is ready to go live @tuaw. Questions, comments or ideas can be submitted via email at tvlive at tuaw [dot] com.

CSI TUAW: Taking iOS microphotographs with Bodelin’s ProScope Micro Mobile

TUAW readers who watched this week’s TUAW TV Live got a sneak peek at the nifty device in this review — Bodelin’s ProScope Micro Mobile (US$ 149), a tool for turning an iPhone (4/4S/5), iPad mini, or 2nd- through 4th-generation iPad into a professional-quality microscope.
That’s right — if you need to take close-up images or video of evidence, circuit boards, stamps, coins, you-name-it, then the ProScope Micro Mobile is the best choice for you.
Design
The Bodelin ProScope Micro Mobile (PMM) is a small and lightweight (2.1 ounces) unit that needs an iOS device as a viewing tool. As such, purchasing one includes a sleeve for your iPhone, iPad, or iPad mini that the device clips onto. The sleeve holds the PMM in place over the rear-facing camera lens on your iOS device.
Gallery: Bodelin ProScope Micro Mobile
The PMM is powered by a rechargeable lithium ion battery that the manufacturer says can power your viewing for up to five hours. A USB to mini-USB cable is provided for charging the battery. So what does the battery provide power for? LEDs. There is a ring of white LEDs around the lens to provide lighting for whatever you’re looking at. A two-position switch selects one of two sets of six LEDs (one set polarized, the other unpolarized), while the power switch also doubles as an intensity switch.
About the optics: the PMM uses a 20X lens to start off. With the 4X digital zoom on your iOS device, you can get the equivalent of 80X magnification. That’s not exactly the type of magnification that is going to show you microbes or individual atoms, but it’s impressive enough for a lot of other work. Bodelin points out that the PMM is used in science education, medical and dermatology work, manufacturing quality control, health and beauty, and the ever-important law enforcement and forensics. You think I’m joking about CSI TUAW? Bodelin products have been used on all of the CSI TV show franchises.
Functionality
On TUAW TV Live, I used the PMM with an iPhone 5 sleeve to look at fingerprints, a 20-pence coin, and components on a faulty Raspberry Pi single-board computer. Using the Reflector app, I was able to beam the image from the iOS camera app to my iMac and then out to the world at large.
Since this hardware uses the iOS Camera app (or any other iOS photography app you choose), you can not only view the magnified image, but also take still photos or video. The gallery below contains images of a US penny, 20X and 80X views of a circuit board, two views of that 20-pence coin, the fine weave on a placemat, my dry skin and some hair (ewww, I need to put lotion on my hands), a printed image, a leaf, and sugar crystals.
The PMM unit moves easily between the different sleeves, so CSI Nick Stokes could use it with his iPad in the LV Crime Lab, then swap it out for the iPhone sleeve in the field.
Some of Bodelin’s other devices currently offer interchangeable lenses with up to 400X magnification. For the purpose of taking images with that level of magnification and still using an iOS device to capture the images, you’ll probably want to look at their ProScope Mobile. At that level of magnification, you will be able to see microorganisms and beam the images over Wi-Fi to an iOS device. The company notes that there is an app called Air MicroPad to grab the images, but I was unable to find it in the App Store.
The user manual for the PMM does talk about changing lenses and installing optional filters, but none of those items appear to be available at this time.
Conclusion
The Bodelin ProScope Micro Mobile is a totally unique accessory for taking high quality microphotographs with your favorite iOS devices. Whether you’re in a quality control lab, a crime scene investigator, or just want to take some cool pictures of highly magnified things, the ProScope Micro Mobile is an affordable solution.
Pros
- Works with the iOS device you already own through available sleeves
- 20X – 80X magnification provides sufficient range for a variety of microphotographs
- Price is quite reasonable for a high-quality piece of equipment
- Adjustable LED lighting makes it possible to capture the image you want without over or underexposure
- Battery life for the LED lights is exceptional
Cons
- None to speak of
Who is it for?
- Anyone who wants to take microphotographs with an iOS device, whether for work or play

TUAW TV Live: Little keyboards, big eyes

I’m not sure if Doc Rock will be joining me today for TUAW TV Live or not, seeing that he’s at TechCrunch Disrupt NY 2013. But if that’s the case, I should be easily able to fill an hour of time talking about some of the fascinating projects being touted at this year’s event. There are also some useful and interesting accessories that have arrived at the TUAW Labs that I’ll be demonstrating, and of course there are some good rumors out there that we can talk about in the chat room.
Below, you’ll find a Ustream livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments. You’ll be watching the show in glorious HD!
If you’re driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you’re stuck in traffic, please don’t — keep your eyes on the road! However, if someone else is doing the driving, you can watch the show on your iPhone and join the chat by downloading the free Ustream App. It’s a universal app and is wonderful on an iPad, both for viewing and participating in the chat. In addition, the live stream and chat will be available through our Facebook page. Just point your browser here to watch the show and chat with other viewers while you’re on Facebook.
We’ll start at about 5 PM ET, so if you’re seeing a prerecorded show, be sure to refresh your browser until you see the live stream. For those of you who are not able to join us for the live edition, you’ll be able to view it later this evening on our TUAW Video YouTube channel and as part of the TUAW TV Live podcast viewable in iTunes or on any of your Apple devices.

Dear Uncle TUAW: What’s the best way to blog while backpacking?

Dear Uncle TUAW:
Over the next two years my husband and I plan to hike El Camino de Santiago in Spain. I’d love to keep family and friends up to date on our trek by blogging on the trip, but since we want to keep our backpacks at less than 14 lbs. total weight, I’m not sure I want to carry an iPad and I know for sure that a laptop is going to be too heavy. Since weight and space are issues, what would you blog from if you were in my hiking boots?
Your loving niece,
Susan
Dear Susan,
I’m glad to hear that you’re going to be out walking. Too many of you young whippersnappers spend all of your time on your keisters in front of those fancy HDTVs instead of getting good, clean exercise in the great outdoors. Your Aunt and I used to do a lot of hiking. Remind me to tell you about our experiences in Bhutan in 1958…
Anyway, my first choice for lightweight blogging would be to grab an iPad mini and one of those newfangled keyboard cases, but if you’re really trying to keep things light, why not just use that iPhone of yours as a small tablet?
With that phone, you can not only grab great photos, but use them in your blog. While you’re hiking, you can even talk to that Siri lady and she’ll take down your notes like my old secretary Mabel used to do back at the munitions plant. Without the backtalk, of course. And the bad breath. But that’s another story… When you get to wherever you’re setting up camp for the night, you can while away the hours cleaning up her dictation. Yes, I had to clean up Mabel’s dictation, too.
Frankly, I’d take along a lightweight keyboard of some sort if I were you. Since you won’t want to worry about charging batteries on a keyboard, one that’s powered by the sun might be handy. Speaking of charging batteries, you can also take one of these crank-powered things with you on your hike to give your hands something to do. Charge up the battery pack by hand-cranking it, then use it to charge your iPhone while you’re trying to sleep at night with all of those other pilgrims snoring around you. No need to look for a power outlet or carry along those pesky international power adapters.
That’s all I’ll say about hardware, which referred to nuts and bolts in my earlier days, but what about blogging software? If you don’t have a travel blog already, MapQuest’s Travel Blog app is free and includes free hosting of your text and photos. Got one of those WordPress blogs? Their free app isn’t too bad, either. You can be really smart and take all of your pictures with the iPhone so you don’t have to carry a separate camera with all of its weight and bulk, and they’ll go right into your blog. I’m rather fond of that Tumblr service for travel blogging myself, although please don’t tell your Aunt about my “Tumblr After Dark” adventures in Amsterdam last year…
Stay safe; watch out for blisters; and have a good trip!
Hugs and kisses,
Uncle TUAW

There’s plenty of Apple news to talk about this week on TUAW TV Live. Yesterday’s earnings report sparked some interest in the fortunes of our favorite company, as well as what Apple CEO Tim Cook referred to cryptically as “new product categories” to be announced in the fall and throughout 2014.

TUAW TV Live: Tools and toys

Today on TUAW TV Live, the topic is tools and toys. For bloggers, the most popular tools are text editors, and I’ll have a live demo of Ulysses III on the show today. Megan Lavey-Heaton wrote up a nice review of this text editor from The Soulmen a few days ago, and I was impressed enough by what she said that I ended up buying Ulysses III and its iOS counterpart Daedalus. The two can be linked via iCloud or Dropbox, and I’m finding both to be useful in my everyday work.
As for the toys, we always have a parade of stuff going through the TUAW Labs at any time, so today’s show will most likely feature some items to praise or make fun of. I’m not sure if my normal cohort Shawn “Doc Rock” Boyd will be joining me for the show today, but if he is, I’m sure he’ll have a variety of awe-inspiring new goodies to tell us about.
