Amazon’s MacBook Air stock dwindles

Last week TUAW reported on the diminishing numbers of MacBook Airs available from third-party retailers like Best Buy. Now the source of that information, AppleInsider, is reporting that Amazon is completely sold out of the 11.6-inch low-end MacBook Air (1.7 GHz Intel Core i5, 64 GB storage) with other models showing that they’re “n/a”.

AppleInsider points out that Amazon’s listing for the entry-level 11.6-inch model is “consistent with a discontinued item on Amazon, with no indication that stock will be replenished. In contrast, the online retailer typically portrays a simple stockout with availability advertised for ‘one to two months.’”

Stock of many MacBook Air configurations is limited at other retailers, including Best Buy, MacMall, J&R and MacConnection. Apple Stores and the online store still show availability of both the 11.6-inch and 13-inch models.

Speculation is rife that new MacBook Air models might be announced during the WWDC 2013 keynote on June 10, possibly using Intel’s new Haswell processors for increased performance and battery life.

Half of Apple’s MacBook Air lineup now sold out at Amazon ahead of WWDC

MacBook Air models, including Apple’s popular 11.6-inch, sub-$ 1,000 offering, continue to go out of stock at Amazon ahead of an anticipated product refresh that’s expected to add Intel’s latest-generation Haswell processors.

MacBook Air inventory begins dwindling ahead of Apple’s WWDC

With Intel’s next-generation Haswell processors set to launch in a matter of weeks and WWDC to kick off soon after, availability of Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Air had begun to dry up at major authorized resellers.

MacBook Air supply dwindling as WWDC approaches

It’s clearly not the best time to be looking for a MacBook Air — 13-inch versions are in especially short supply. The reason for the shortage will be obvious to those who follow Apple closely: it’s almost time for the Apple World Wide Developer Conference starting June 10, and Apple is likely going to refresh the popular laptops with the next-generation Intel Haswell Processor.

Apple Insider reports that the only reseller with any significant inventory of the best selling model — outfitted with a 1.8 GHz processor and 256 GB solid state drive — is Best Buy. Typically, a constrained supply means new products are in the pipeline. The 11-inch MacBook Air is showing up as available at resellers.

Supply chain rumors have stated a new MacBook Air is on the way with the new Intel processors, with availability predicted for next month. The new chips from Intel promise to generate less heat, consume less power and allow longer battery life. The chips also have a new integrated graphics processor, claiming a 50 percent hike in performance.

Steve Jobs introduced the first MacBook Air in 2008, and promoted at the time as the world’s thinnest notebook. Since then Apple has added new models, increased performance and battery life, and added new features such as USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt support.

Review: HardShell Case coats Retina MacBook Pro in a candy-colored shell

As sturdy as Apple’s MacBooks are, it’s a little depressing to pull your laptop out of your bag and discover a ding or scratch on the aluminum case. If you want some extra protection for your laptop, Handy Candy Cases’ $ 60 HardShell Case might be the answer.

Hard Candy makes the HardShell Case for the Retina MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air. (I tested a version for the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro.) The case consists of four pieces of translucent, rigid plastic. The plastic doesn’t feel brittle or cheap, and it’s available in blue, black, lime, or red.

Snapping the HardShell Case onto your laptop is easy and takes just a few minutes. Before doing so, however, you’ll want to clean the outside of your MacBook and the inside of the HardShell Case’s pieces to prevent any dirt or debris from getting trapped inside.

With the HardShell Case on my MacBook Pro, I was able to connect various cables and several different USB flash drives without a problem. However, if you have a very oddly shaped USB device, there’s a possibility that the bottom shell, which sticks out a bit just below the computer’s ports, could get in the way.

Tightening MacBook Air Supplies at Resellers Hint at Upcoming Refresh

As noted by AppleInsider, MacBook Air supplies are beginning to dry up as Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference approaches.

Currently, the 13.3-inch 256GB 1.8Ghz MacBook Air is out of stock at Amazon.com, with a listed one to two month waiting period. While the low end 13.3-inch MacBook Air is in stock, the 11.6-inch MacBook Air is in short supply. Amazon lists an inventory of just ten 1.7Ghz 128GB 11.6-inch MacBook Airs and just one lower end 64GB 11.6-inch MacBook Air available through a third party.

Several other authorized Apple resellers, such as MacConnection, MacMall, and B&H, are also seeing dwindling MacBook Air inventory, with the higher end versions of 13.3-inch MacBook Air being the hardest to find.

Low inventory supplies at third-party Apple retailers are often one of the initial signs of an upcoming product refresh. According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will be introducing new MacBook Pro and MacBook Air lines based on Intel’s Haswell processors at WWDC, which takes place next month from June 10 to June 14.

Best Buy, Amazon knock 10% off Apple’s MacBook Airs & iMacs for Mother’s Day

Weekend discounts on Apple’s personal computer family continue this month, as Apple works with partners like big-box retailer Best Buy to push sales of Macs in the face of weak global demand, and a bearish outlook for the consumer PC business in general.

Review: Jas Pro and L-Stand stylishly hold your MacBook Pro

Cooler Master is known for its PC-cooling devices, but the company also makes laptop stands designed especially for the MacBook Pro. I’ve been using two of Cooler Master’s stands, the $ 70 Jas Pro and the $ 60 L-Stand.

Jas Pro

Made of aluminum, the Jas Pro matches the aesthetics of Apple’s MacBook Pro and feels solid. The stand has rubber strips so the metal of the MacBook Pro doesn’t rub against the metal of the stand.

The Jas Pro

The Jas Pro is pretty basic and offers only height adjustability. I was able to adjust the stand so that the top of my 15-inch MacBook Pro’s screen lined up with the top of my 27-inch display. If you need to turn the laptop to the right or left, you turn the whole stand—rubber feet keep the stand from slipping. The Jas Pro folds into a compact package that makes it easy to put in a laptop bag.

While Cooler Master advertises the Jas Pro as a MacBook Pro stand, it works nicely as an iPad stand as well, especially if you’re using an external iPad keyboard.

Notebook Refresh to Be Highlight of WWDC, Non-Retina MacBook Pro to Continue?

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has issued a new report forecasting that the product highlight of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which kicks off on June 10, will be the introduction of new models of the company’s MacBook Pro and MacBook Air lines based on Intel’s latest Haswell processors. The projection is in line with previous reports from Kuo and other sources, as well as recent claims that Apple will begin ramping up production of the new models in mid-May.

macbook_pro_and_retina
On the MacBook Pro side, Kuo is reversing his earlier predictions suggesting that 2013 would see Apple discontinue the non-Retina MacBook Pro lineup and shift consumers to the slimmer and more expensive Retina line introduced at last year’s WWDC. Kuo believes that continued strength of non-Retina MacBook Pro models, particularly the 13-inch line, have led Apple to continue producing the non-Retina lineup for the time being.

Contrary to our previous projection, we now think Apple will continue to make the MacBook Pro alongside the MacBook Air and Retina MacBook Pro because the 13” MacBook Pro remains the most popular product in the MacBook line. Also, there is still demand in emerging markets, where Internet penetration isn’t advanced, for optical disk drives.

Kuo believes that the updated versions of the non-Retina MacBook Pro could begin shipping very soon after WWDC, but that the new Retina MacBook Pro models will begin shipping somewhat later due to production bottlenecks on the displays.

For the MacBook Air, Kuo also believes that the new models will be introduced at WWDC and ship very soon after, but he indicates that Apple is unlikely to include Retina displays in the updated lineup. He believes the cost, thickness, and production concerns will continue to keep Retina displays out of Apple’s lowest-cost and thinnest notebook line for the time being.
